SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING

Every School Resource Officer (“SRO”) must complete forty (40) hours of school resource officer training through:

  1. the Indiana law enforcement training board established by IC 5-2-1-3;
  2. the National Association of School Resource Officers; or
  3. another school resource officer training program approved by the Indiana law enforcement training board.

Training must be completed within three hundred sixty-five (365) days from the date the individual is initially assigned the duties of a school resource officer.

If the Western Wayne Schools (“Corporation”) has established a school corporation police department, all school corporation police officers are also required to complete training and education to appropriately deal with individuals with autism and Asperger’s syndrome.

If the Corporation has not established a school corporation police department or directly employed SROs, the Corporation will enter into a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a law enforcement agency employing or appointing a law enforcement officer who will do the duties of a school resource officer.  The MOU will state the nature and scope of the officer’s responsibilities.

The Superintendent is authorized to establish administrative guidelines to implement this policy.
