ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

The School Board shall establish student entrance requirements that are consistent with Indiana law and sound educational practice and which ensure equitable treatment and proper placement.

A. Kindergarten

Each child of legal settlement or who has been granted transfer status shall be eligible for Kindergarten providing that s/he has attained the age of five (5) on or before the date detailed in Indiana law.

B. First Grade

If a child seeking to enroll in first grade has not attended kindergarten, the Superintendent shall make a determination as to whether the student will enroll in kindergarten or first grade based upon the assessment model found in the administrative guidelines.

An assessment process for determining kindergarten or first grade placement for children entering school for the first time under the state compulsory attendance laws shall be utilized. The Superintendent or his or her designee will create an assessment procedure accordingly.

It is mandatory that the parents or guardian of the child seeking enrollment provide a birth certificate or other acceptable proof of age in order to enroll their child. Should such information not be readily available, the child may be admitted for a grace period of thirty (30) days. The child may be withdrawn at the end of the grace period should the parent fail to provide suitable proof of age.

Kindergarten Appeal Procedure

Parents may appeal to the Superintendent or his or her designee for early entrance of students who do not meet the state minimum kindergarten age requirement. The Superintendent will develop the appeal procedure.
